Help Me Grow at Brevard Zoo: Screen and Play with Us on June 20th

By Belinda Steward, 211 Brevard/Help Me Grow Brevard May 27, 2024

It will be a zoo, in the best way! Maybe a little crowded and chaotic, but oh so much fun!

Help Me Grow Brevard will offer one free zoo ticket, while supplies last, for each child aged 0-5½ screened during its family fun Books Balls & Blocks event, 9 am - noon Tuesday, June 20, at Brevard Zoo’s Nyami Nyami River Lodge.

Plus, each screened child attending will receive a book and beach ball to take home, also while supplies last, and parents will get educational materials about Help Me Grow and child development.

Families who attend the event will get priority for zoo tickets and other prizes, but screenings also can be done online at 211brevard.org/help-me-grow

“Families tell us how much they appreciate knowing their child is on track for developmental milestones or what areas may need some attention,” said Kara Bradley, Help Me Grow Brevard supervisor.

“Identifying an issue early and addressing it early is key, and this is a way that makes it fun for the children and parents.”

The Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) assesses five major areas of development – communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem-solving, and personal-social; the ASQ:SE-2 focuses on social-emotional health.

Both ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE-2 must be completed, and parents must go over results with the care coordinator in order to be eligible for prizes. This may be done in person at the event or by phone.

Help Me Grow Brevard is a coalition of nonprofit and government agencies led by 211 Brevard, which works to increase the number of young children who get routine developmental screenings and get connected to needed services.

211 Brevard is an affiliate of Help Me Grow Florida, a state-funded system designed to promote healthy development for every child.

The Help Me Grow Brevard partnership includes 211 Brevard, Early Learning Coalition of Brevard, Healthy Start Coalition, Space Coast Early Steps, Brevard Health Alliance, Florida Department of Health in Brevard Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Brevard Public Schools Child Find/FDLRS, Space Coast Health Foundation and United Way of Brevard Healthy Families.

As a bonus, families may earn a chance to win a “giant” stuffed Melissa & Doug giraffe by visiting with Help Me Grow partners on June 20 at the zoo.

Help Me Grow Florida is sponsored by the Children’s Forum and the State of Florida, Division of Early Learning.
