Celebrate Grandparents' Day in South Brevard + 3 Long Distance Ideas

Grandparents' Day is Sept. 10th

By Alison Ellis, publisher of Macaroni KID South Brevard September 5, 2023

Grandparents' Day is Sunday, September 10th, and there's no better way to show the grandparents in your life how much you and your kids love and appreciate them than spending some quality time with them. And for those of you grandparents raising your grandkids full-time? We see and very much appreciate you!

Lucky enough to have grandparents who live close by? I've got five ideas on how to spend Grandparents Day in Brevard County that have cross-generational appeal. If you've got long-distance grandparents, scroll down to find three ideas for celebrating to bridge the gap between you.

Local Grandparents

1. Make Something Together at Get Fired Up

Creativity is enjoyed by young and old alike! Choose a ceramic piece - there are TONS to choose from - paint it, and then it will be glazed and fired. Having a memento of your time spent together will be the cherry on top of a fun outing. Walk-ins are accepted, but we recommend reserving a space by calling (321) 729-0222.

2. Visit Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex

Younger kids will love Planet Play, older kids will enjoy the interactive exhibits and rides, and adults love learning and reminiscing about the history of the space program. The added bonus? Most of the exhibits are in the A/C. Check out our recent reel and post for more info!

3. Go For Ice Cream

Who doesn't like a sweet treat? Young and old alike can appreciate an ice cream date. One of our top picks: 321 Ice Cream Bar. It's a build-your-own-ice cream and sundae bar... need I say more?

4. Go to a Park

Depending on your grandparent's physical capabilities, they can sit on a bench and enjoy watching the kids have fun on a playground, or they can come along on a walk or bike ride. Need help picking a park? Click here for a list of all the parks in Brevard County and be on the lookout for our playground guide coming soon!

5. Visit a Spot Special to Your Grandparents

Flip the script and take your grandparents to one of their favorite places. If your grandparents grew up in Brevard County, have them show you the home they grew up in or their favorite place to hang out as a teen. They can reminisce on good memories while your kids learn something new about them!

Long-Distance Grandparents

Let them know you're thinking of them on Grandparents' Day! Here are three ways to tell them you love them from a distance:

1. Schedule a Video Call

We love technology that allows us to see our loved ones thousands of miles away. To make the call extra special, kids can have a prepared list of all the things they love about grandma and grandpa.

2. Send Some Snail Mail

Send some art, assemble a care package, write a thoughtful letter, or mail a hug! To make the hug, tape a few pieces of paper together and outline your child with their arms outstretched. Let your kids color themselves in and send some happy mail!

3. Conduct an Interview

Our kids (and even us) often don't know much about their grandparents' past or their lives growing up. Your kids will love learning more about them through these interview questions. You can email this list, ask the questions over the phone, or conduct an interview via video call. Click here to get the list
