Help Me Grow Joins Lions at Brevard Zoo: Screen With Us June 27

By Belinda Stewart, 211 Brevard/Help Me Grow Brevard June 2, 2022

Can you hear them roar? Three lion brothers arrived this spring at their new home at Brevard Zoo. Do you want to see them? The 3-year-old trio has only been in view of the public for a few weeks.

Help Me Grow Brevard will offer two free zoo tickets, while supplies last, and the chance to check out the lions for each child aged 0-8 screened during its family fun Books Balls & Blocks event, 9am-1pm Monday, June 27, at the zoo’s Nyami  Nyami River Lodge.

Each child also will receive a free book to take home, while parents will get education materials about Help Me Grow and child development.

“We’re headed into summer, and we know families are looking for fun things to do,” said Cassandra Baker, Help Me Grow Brevard’s care coordinator.

“This event allows parents to make sure children are meeting their developmental milestones, while they participate in  activities in our supervised play area.”

Children ages 2 months to 5½ years will be screened online using the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3) and the  ASQ:SE-2, which tracks social-emotional health.

Children up to 8 years old may be screened using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist.

Parents must go over the results with the care coordinator in order to be eligible for prizes.

Vision and hearing screenings also will be available.

Help Me Grow Brevard is a coalition of nonprofit and government agencies led by 211 Brevard, which works to increase the number of young children who get routine developmental screenings.

211 Brevard is an affiliate of Help Me Grow Florida, a state-funded system designed to promote healthy development for every child.

The Help Me Grow Brevard partnership includes 21- Brevard, Early Learning Coalition of Brevard, Healthy Start Coalition,  Space Coast Early Steps, Brevard Health Alliance, Florida Department of Health in Brevard Women, Infants and Children  (WIC), Brevard Public Schools Child Find/FDLRS, Space Coast Health Foundation and United Way of Brevard Healthy  Families.

Many of the partners will offer information and activities June 27 at the zoo.
