Social Distancing At The Farm

By Amanda Aharon, Owner & Publisher of Macaroni Kid South Brevard May 15, 2020

Staying home all the time has been tough! My 3 year old is going stir crazy and so am I! So last week we decided to check out two local farms! Fresh air, farm animals, sunshine and social distancing... what more do you need?!

LaPorte Farms

Our first stop was LaPorte Farms located in Sebastian. It is only about a 30-40 minute drive from Melbourne. LaPorte Farms is a 501(c)3 non-profit so there is no cost to visit the farm, it is completely FREE! They do have apples and carrots you can purchase for $1 each to feed the animals (totally worth it!) The staff at the farm are all very nice and helpful. There weren't many people there and everyone was very respectful of social distancing. They also have hand sanitizing stations located all around the farm. We got to see chickens, roosters, a pig, tortoise, zebra, cow, horses, donkeys, goats, talking parrots, and a bird aviary. You are allowed to feed all the animals with 4 legs! They also offer pony rides for $5.

Location: 7700 129th St, Sebastian, FL.

Hours: Monday-Friday 8am-2pm, Saturday & Sunday 8am-4pm

Obloy Family Ranch

This farm is located in Merritt Island and was also about a 30-40 minute drive from Melbourne. Obloy Family Ranch is a petting farm and wildlife rescue. The cost to visit the farm is $15 (adults), $9 (children ages 3-12), and 2 years and under are free. However, they are offering a $5 entrance fee for the whole month of May if you mention their Facebook ad! They also have bags of food you can purchase to feed the animals for $5 or $10 each. A hayride around the property is included in admission. They are currently taking groups of 10 people per tour to ensure proper social distancing. They also have hand sanitizing stations located around the farm. We got to see camels, cows, a baby zebra, porcupines, tortoise, donkeys, horses, sheep and much more! We were able to feed almost all of the animals! The farm also has a country store, bbq pit, a play area, train rides, and horseback riding!

Location: 165 Gator Drive, Merritt Island, FL.

Hours: Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm
