10 Sick Day Activities for Kids

How to Keep Kids Busy When You are Stuck at Home

By Amanda Aharon January 22, 2025

Unfortunately we didn't get to go on any adventures this week because my little guy caught that dreaded stomach bug thats been going around town. Cartoons and cuddles are great, but that can get old after a few days stuck inside. So here are my Macaroni Mama tips and tricks for keeping a sick kid occupied at home.

1. Make Popsicles

Fluids are your friend! The scariest thing about a kid who is vomiting is the risk of dehydration. Making popsicles is a fun activity and a great way to get those fluids in! Popsicles are also great for soothing a sore throat.

2. Build a Fort

Drape some sheets over some chairs and fill the space with pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, books and flashlights. This is a cozy place for kids to pass the time and get some rest while they are healing.

3. Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Try hiding stuffed animals, telling them to find 10 things that are red, or 5 things that start with the letter B. You can customize this depending on your child's age.

4. Get Crafty

Pull out the play dough, paint, stamps, and stickers and let them go to town! This doesn't take much physical effort and will hopefully keep them busy for a while.

5. Play Doctor

Misery loves company, right? Let your child take care of their "sick" stuffed animals. Go wild with bandaids and wraps!

6. Go Outside

As long as your child doesn't have a fever, a little fresh air can do the body good. Bring out the sidewalk chalk or some bubbles for a little extra fun!

7. Have a Picnic

If your child isn't up to going outside, throw a blanket down and have a picnic on the living room floor. Let them pick their favorite sandwich and snacks.

8. Water Play

Get some bath paint or crayons and let them have some fun in the shower. Not only will this help pass the time, but the steam will help clear their congestion.

9. Sensory Bins

Fill a container with water, dried beans, sand, feathers or noodles for some sensory fun! Be careful, this one can get a little messy!

10. Board Games

Challenge them to a board game! Maybe even let them win 😜
